Are pictures uploaded to the server or just saved in the memory card?

Are pictures saved uploaded to the server or just saved in the SD card. How do one get the pictures back if the phone is not reachable or is stolen?

  The pictures are stored on the SD card until you either format it or if overwrite is turned on and the card gets full it will delete some to make room for the newer pictures. Pictures are stored on the server/portal for 30 days or until you delete them.
