    Is it in a heavy shaded area or under a thick canopy?

    Is this only at certain times of the day (transition) or all during the day? If it’s happening during low light, the camera may be finding enough light for one pic and then not the next, but if it’s happening all the time, that’s not normal.

    I have to apologize for one of the dumber questions :-) ever posted....

    After reading your responses, I realized it is because the camera is inside and it got dark outside (and inside, no lights on).  (I was having problems with this camera, finally got it from the field and support suggested I update firmware (which made it start working again).  I was leaving it inside to test for a couple of days to make certain before putting it back out in the field).
