How to request & receive vid?.
-
You will not get videos to email, only to the app. You must request the video when looking at the photo. If Android, tap on the three dots in the upper right and select Request Video. If iOS, there’s a little camera icon on the row below the photo that you need to tap. The video will not come in until after the next time the camera contacts the server.
Why do you want to request a photo now? There may be other ways to handle what you want to do. For example, if you want to see whether your camera is working, the best way to do that is to use scheduled events and have your camera check in with a photo or status report at specific times of the day. If you’re trying to see whether there are deer in the distance (too far away to trigger your camera) before you go to your stand, if you have a scheduled event for before you would normally go to your stand, you can turn time lapse on and then turn it off when you get to your stand. -
Will give it a try, Elizabeth. Yes, I was told could send request to cam for photo or vid. Why would I want to see what is going on at any random time I choose? Because I might, that's why. Is an obvious and necessary function. And is a disappointment that such would need wxplanation, honestly. A good idea for next firmware upgrade: ability to request photo or video clip on demand.
Another free firmware upgrade idea: make so can request *full resolution* video clip.

Yes is set to photo + vid as stated in OP. However, do see most recent pic was by event trigger not motion...nevwr set up any events. I requested HiRes photo and no vid option. The other photos *do* have the vid ootion it turns out...so will recheck that settings didn't automatically change.
Still wantto be able to request a photo or vid though.

Yeah I did the firmware update steps and it rebooted. I took and sent a pic...then nothing. No indication it was doing anything. No indication of success. ??? Need to do something else too??
So I went to portal and it only shows 4 pics, no vid. Yes confirmed it is still set to pic+vid mode,10-sec clip. What else need to do so it also takes vid when triggered?

Oh I see. Well that does make sense. Suppose the fix would be to have it ping server once/x minutes (like my security system does with its sensors) to see if server has any requests pending for it. If so, stay on connection until requests completed. If not, go back to sleep.
Spartan, you should put me on payroll. Computer scientist here.
And riddle me this...how can you request a status update from the device then? There must be some sort of comm ping functionality already, for app to request status update from device...so....

You can call or email and leave a message, they return calls and emails in the order that they were received. If you want me to take a look at things for you you can email me your portal log in info and I'll see what I can do. My email is johnny.lockburner@spartancamera.com

Richard,
I’m a computer geek, too. Go back to mainframes in the 1970s.
Use scheduled events to make the camera “ping” the server several times throughout the day. Every time the camera is online, it is using battery power, which is why it doesn’t stay online all the time.
If there is something happening in front of the camera, you should be getting motion-triggered pictures unless the movement is too far away. I’ve had people say they want to take a picture, but if all you’re going to get is a picture with nothing but scenery in it, I don’t see why not just set that up as a scheduled event. I used to want to take a picture now to see if my camera was working, but I just have a bunch of scheduled events set so I get pictures or status reports about every 3 hours.
There’s no reason to have the camera set to 8 PM. The native resolution is 5 MP. The extra 3 MP are just “made up” (interpolated).
Video size: videos use a lot of data, and not everyone has unlimited data. Larger videos take more time to send (camera is unavailable to take pics longer) and use more battery. There are compromisesWhen you are running photo + video, the videos stay on the camera until you request one. They are not transmitted until after the NEXT time the camera contacts the server, which is just one reason I have frequent scheduled events. Perhaps this article on settings might help?
