The W4 has an internal battery that is charged by a solar panel or solar panel/battery combination. The internal aa's are not charged by either. This is a 12 volt camera so you want your external setup to be 12 volts. The internal battery isn't huge so if you are expecting a lot of pictures per day you'll want the external battery as well. I don't see a link to any information on the panel, might be best to give them a call. If I do find something I'll post it.

So, an internal battery in addition to the AA’s? Well, what do you know, there’s a mention of that in the spec sheet, but no other information. The manual says that you should use “6 AA batteries (either in the top or bottom bay)” if you use the direct-connect solar panel. No information as to why. If they were charged by the panel, I’d think they would recommend rechargeables. I guess that’s because the internal battery is so small.

Thanks for the solar panel link.

The internal battery is very small. If the camera takes many pictures, that internal battery may not have enough power at night. The solar panel only charges the internal battery. The AA are for night and are not recharged by the solar panel.
