The batteries are in three groups of 4 so I'm not surprised it works after you put the top two in on the left. Have you tried defaulting the camera in it's menu? Is the cameras firmware up to date? Maybe try a different SD card as well.

Tried updating firmware, that seems to be when the trouble started. Changed sd card and what little time it came on, I formatted it. I’ll try defaulting it. Thanks. Tom

No go. I have to turn camera on to ‘setup’ put in #8 battery from the left, then it will come on. No other time will it start. Then stays on ‘searching network’

Tom & Mark, I was able to replicate the issue you're having with the batteries and turning the camera on. I was running an external but similar symptoms where the camera wouldn't turn on after I turned it off unless I unplugged the external, turned the camera to set up and then plugged it back in. Once I did a manual firmware update the switch and on and off started working normally again. I then had to format the SD card and default the camera and immediately after the default completed turn the camera off and back to set up and it found signal and started transmitting pictures again. Here's a link to the updates and instructions. Make sure to format the card before you load the firmware on to it and use the firmware for your exact camera model.
