Solar and battery box

I just purchased a 12v battery and box with solar cell and all the extras to run my cam. Haven’t received in mail yet, so I don’t have the information on how to hook it up. My question is do I still need batteries in the cam itself in the AA spots? If so do they need to be a specific kind or does it even matter? Thanks

    What camera model and did you get the Spartan Battery box?

    Not sure of the model cam, don’t have in front of me at the moment, it’s brand new, ordered through US cellular. The box and panel are spartan. It’s the 12v setup

    OK, that's enough info. You don't have to have batteries in the camera but I like to so you can turn the camera to setup and take a manual photo before turning the camera on and closing it up. You can just put four batteries in the camera if you want to (top two on the left and bottom two on the left) The type of battery in the camera doesn't matter, I like low self discharge rechargeable because they have the least chance of leaking if in the camera for a long time. The other nice thing about batteries in the camera is that if the external does become unplugged the batteries inside are a nice backup to keep the camera running.

    Johnnydeerhunter, Any recommendations on the brand of rechargeable batteries? I made a home made solar/recharging box but currently have Duracell's installed as a back up.

    I've been running rechargeable batteries since about 2007 and eneloop are by far the best and longest lasting. You need a good charger too and my favorite is the Maha mh-c9000

    I have the GC-ATTi cam. Will that 12V solar/recharging box work on this camera? I was under the impression the Spartan cameras were a 6V set up.

    Yes the battery box will work for your camera. The output of the box is 6v. You can use either a 12v or 6v battery in the box, output is 6v.

    Sam, I just want to clarify that it has to be the Spartan box, other brands don't regulate the 12v down to 6v

    Ok, so the Spartan box is taking the 12V battery and converting it to a 6V output, right? Makes sense then on how/why this will work. Great info John, thank you

    Yes that's correct. If you connect 12 volts to any camera other than the Ghost bad things will happen.
