If I buy a New clean SD card for my new 4g Verizon camera why do I need to download new/latest version of firmware to the new card?

  You don't have to. Buying a new SD card has nothing to do with the firmware on the camera. Either your firmware is up to date or it isn't

  The only thing you have to do with a new SD card is format it in the camera.
