Initial trigger delay

I would tilt the camera up a little bit, if the deer are coming right to left they may be above the sweet spot in the sensing area. That will also help get your flash to carry out farther and brighten things up even more rather than most of the flash hitting the ground right in front of the camera. If you think it's aimed too high after tilting it up then just lower the camera on the tree a bit.

I'm going to be adjusting angle and back drop as well. But I have one super close as well that didn't trigger well.

When they are that close it doesn't take long to get from one side of the frame to the other. Are you using video only or photo + video?
