It would not hurt to format the card on a computer. Whether you do that or not, format the card in camera before using.

How do I format it on the computer? I’m sorry, I am not tech savvy what so ever.

If your computer does not have an SD card slot, you will need a USB adaptor to plug your SD card into and then you will plug this adaptor into a USB port on your computer. When you do this you will see a pop up indicating that your computer sees this new USB device/adaptor. Click on that popup and then choose open folder to view files. In the window that opens up you should see the USB drive highlighted on the left. Right click on that and you will see several options including format. Select start, click ok and it will format the card in a few seconds. That’s it.

All that said, formatting the card in the camera is quicker, easier and adequate.

Bailey, as Ross said formatting in the camera is plenty good enough (it's an option in the menu), especially for a new memory card. As far as the firmware update after you get the camera up and running you can request the update if it's needed through the app and when the camera sends a picture it should see the request to update and do it over the air. I would do that at home after you're all set up and while you're playing with the camera to learn how it functions.
